UMOJA Smart Resilience

Connecting Kivu biodigesters to local monitoring and response capacity.

MotoBox™ observes site operation. BioCloud™ is being developed to centralise measurements, alerts and technical follow-up. The system currently remains a functional prototype tested in Goma.

UMOJA Smart Resilience

MotoBox™ observes the site. BioCloud™ prepares the technical response.

The system links a box placed near the biodigester to a supervision interface. A first functional prototype is declared on a 10 m³ biodigester in Goma.

From signal to service

Four movements turn a measurement into field action.

  1. 01

    Measure

Pilot sensors monitor biodigester pH and pressure.

  2. 02

    Transmit

The ESP32 prepares measurements and currently uses a Wi-Fi connection.

  3. 03

    Supervise

BioCloud™ is being developed to bring together the status and history of connected sites.

  4. 04

    Respond

An actionable alert should help the client and UMOJA organise a technical response.

MotoBox™

The contact point between the biodigester and its data.

The prototype combines an ESP32 microcontroller with a locally made enclosure. Its screen, indicators, controls and connections keep testing and diagnosis accessible to the technical team.

BioCloud™

One shared view for the client and the UMOJA team.

BioCloud™ is the application under development to gather MotoBox™ data, identify abnormal situations and preserve the history of an intervention.

The interface is not yet a generally available commercial service.

Site register

Locate connected installations and open their technical record.

Measurement history

Review pH, pressure and future available measurements over time.

Shared alerts

Inform UMOJA and the client when a value requires verification.

Service follow-up

Document diagnosis, technician assignment and resolution.

PAYG Mobile Money

Start with 50%, then pay the balance monthly.

The planned model is intended to reduce the amount required before installation. After the site assessment and quote approval, the client pays half of the price, then gradually settles the balance through Mobile Money.

Roadmap · not commercially available today

Illustration of the PAYG journey from deposit and installation to Mobile Money instalments and safe gas control
  1. 01

    50% deposit

The client approves the quote and pays half of the amount before work begins.

  2. 02

    Installation activated

UMOJA builds and commissions the biodigester and creates the customer payment schedule.

  3. 03

    Mobile instalments

The balance is paid progressively through Mobile Money over the agreed period.

  4. 04

    Access kept current

Each payment updates the account and maintains gas access until the balance is fully settled.

Planned architecture

From confirmed payment to the PAYG valve.

This chain still depends on Mobile Money integration, GSM/M2M SIM connectivity and control hardware.

Mobile Money

Confirms the transaction and relevant instalment.

BioCloud™

Updates the balance and customer account status.

GSM / SIM M2M

Transmits status in a way suited to remote sites.

MotoBox™ + vanne

Controls only the usable gas outlet without blocking safety functions.

Safety: after reminders and the contractual grace period, the system may temporarily restrict distribution to the customer’s appliance. Fermentation, pressure relief and other biodigester safety functions must never be blocked. Service is restored after payment is brought up to date.

Measure without overstating

Carbon-footprint measurement.

A future carbon indicator must combine measured and documented data—biogas produced, waste recovered and fuel displaced—with a validated MRV methodology.

Roadmap

Move from pilot to deployable infrastructure.

  1. 01Reinforce field hardwareTarget IP67/ATEX enclosure, GSM/M2M SIM, LoRa and PAYGO valve.
  2. 02Characterise the gasNDIR CH₄ sensor and a documented carbon MRV framework.
  3. 03Open validated dataCarbon reports, potential Verra certification and a controlled public API.

IP67/ATEX, PAYGO, CH₄, MRV, Verra and API are development targets, not functions commercially available today.
